The usage of QR codes has become increasingly popular during the pandemic, but their abuse is a growing cyber threat.

A new phishing method using QR codes is becoming popular among criminals because the human eye cannot identify a malicious QR code from a legitimate one.

So here are some security measures that can be put into action to protect yourself from such malicious acts:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀

  • NEVER ever scan a code from an untrusted source, whether it is a physical place or email.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • If possible, feel the QR code to see if a sticker has been applied over the original and legitimate QR code.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • Use QR reader applications that provide built-in security features. Highly secure QR reader applications are available in the market. Look for essential elements such as showing the content of the link before it is visited and checking the connection against a database of known malicious links.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • If you find a malicious QR code, convey it to the business owner where you found it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The hard truth is that many of us are very curious and have been lured to scan a QR code to see it. People wonder whether it will bring them to a coupon, website, or a code for a free product.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Many of us do not take the time to think that this action might have enormous consequences, such as injecting malware on either our personal or company-owned devices.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So Stay Vigilant! ⠀
